UPDATE ON FOOD ADDITIVES

The proposal to relax restrictions on the use of food additives (see FAILSAFE #11) is not finalised. Four unknown ministers have yet to vote.

So there is still time to contact health ministers. You could ask them to vote against the Australian New Zealand Food Authority's proposal "P150 A Joint General Standard for Food Additives".

You might like to mention some of the following points:

* 50 additives have been found to affect health and behaviour.

* Every time one of these additives is used, someone, somewhere will be affected.

* Reactions to food additives are dose-related and cumulative. P150 proposes to allow additives in higher doses and/or more foods which means more people will be affected.

* Children are the most vulnerable.

* Twice as many women are affected as men.

* The food industry could choose to affect as few people as possible by minimising the use of these additives. Instead they are choosing to affect as many as possible.

* Use of these additives should be reduced, not increased.

* Your experiences - yourself, your children, your students

Comments from individuals are important. Your request will be even more effective if you represent a group, eg preschool, childcare centre, family day care, school, women's group, support group, breastfeeding group, church group, food intolerance group, playgroup, health centre, scout group, sporting club, community organisation - anyone who is concerned about the health and welfare of our children.

Our experience is that consumers are outraged about this proposal. They feel they have not been consulted. Email, fax (see below) or write (c/- Parliament House, Capital City) to the health ministers. And spread the word.
