BRIEF CURRICULUM VITAE: Dr Howard Dengate

BSc (Food Technology, UNSW 1968); PhD (Plant Sciences, Lincoln College NZ 1983); Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Dr Howard Dengate studied food technology at the University of NSW, published extensively on 10 years in wheat research in New Zealand before becoming Director of the Agricultural Research Institute, Wagga Wagga, NSW in 1984. Since 1989 he held several senior executive positions with Australia's Northern Territory Government, focussed on development of the Ord River Irrigation Area Stage 2, the Katherine Daly Basin, attraction of commercial agribusiness and external funding, and development of international trade in live cattle and agribusiness.

In June 2003 Dr Dengate resigned from the public service to follow private interests. He was Chairman of Stocklease Pty Ltd (a livestock financing product) until 2008 when the business was successfully sold to Landmark and resigned from his position of Non-Executive Director of the Australian Agribusiness Fund Investment Management (www.aagim.com.au) at the end of 2008 to concentrate on consumer advocacy interests.

His 34 years of experience in agribusiness range from cold temperate to tropical climates. He has worked in dairying, frozen and freeze-dried foods, wheat and wheat product development, cereal and oilseed breeding, new crop development (sesame, mungbeans, peanuts), horticultural industry development, aquaculture industry development, live cattle and other agri-sector export development, major project development (Ord Stage 2, Katherine Daly Basin, Ti Tree Horticultural Precinct), and in economic and policy development for business in the Northern Territory.

Over the years he has made decisions on thousands of research proposals, industry assistance proposals, land use proposals, carpet-bagger proposals and, of late, venture capital proposals. He has contacts and experience in venture capital processes.

He has particular interests in horticulture, aquaculture, live cattle and small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) development of value adding and expansion into export, particularly to Asia. Dr Dengate has a particularly strong personal network in Asia, principally in Indonesia, nurtured over 15 years in commercial sectors ranging from live cattle and fishing to supermarket access. He also has a sound understanding of the transformations occurring in the Asian food and agribusiness sector.
